A rising number of scientific studies in recent years have investigated the influence of yoga on our mental and physical health. They confirm what the yoga masters and scriptures have said for ages: the brain is able to change through thought, action and external influence; it can reorganize and alter its structure and function.


In this course, we will explore – in both practical workshops and vivid PowerPoint shows – the yogic and scientific foundations of mental and physical health, especially the effect on the brain: new nerve cells develop, the connections between nerve cells become stronger, brain regions become larger and the brain is protected against ageing processes. This strengthens our stress-coping abilities, concentration, awareness, body awareness, recognition and control of our emotions, memory, compassion and empathy, and our immune system. In addition, we learn how classical yoga practices can prevent and alleviate diseases ranging from depression to cancer. The goal of this course is to inspire yoga teachers and practitioners to deepen their practice and broaden their horizons with knowledge of the scientific effects of yoga practice, which has already been incorporated into health care.

Chandrika is a gynaecologist and Sivananda Yoga teacher. She teaches anatomy and physiology in the Sivananda Yoga Teachers’ Training Courses in Europe and has a keen interest in scientific research on yoga.

Arrival day, Friday, 29 May (arrival between 2 and 3:30 pm)

  • 4 – 5:30 pm Asanas and pranayama
  • 6 pm Vegetarian dinner
  • 8 – 9:30 pm Evening meditation, mantra chanting, and course meeting

Saturday and Sunday, 30 and 31 May

  • 6 – 7:30 am Morning meditation, mantra chanting, talk
  • 8 – 9:45 am Asana and pranayama class
  • 10 am Vegetarian brunch
  • 12 – 1:30 pm Course lecture
  • 4 – 5:45 pm Course workshop
  • 6 pm Vegetarian dinner
  • 8 – 9:30 pm Evening meditation, mantra chanting, and a talk, which occasionally is held by a guest presenter.
    Occasionally the evening meditation takes place in the form of a one-hour silent walk.

Departure day, Monday, 1 June

  • 8 – 9:45 am Course workshop

  • 11:30 am – 1 pm Course workshop and leave-taking

Accommodation and meals

Accommodation and meals are in the non-smoking eco-hotel serving wholesfood organic vegetarian meals.

All guest rooms have wooden floors and furniture, health mattresses, shower, toilet, hairdryer, telephone and radio. Most rooms have a balcony.

What you will need for your stay

A meditation pillow for the morning and evening meditation sessions is recommended. A meditation shawl is also advantageous.

To practice the yoga poses you will need a non-slip yoga mat or wool mat. You will need a blanket to cover yourself at the end of the yoga class during the so-called final relaxation.

Pillows, shawls, blankets, mats and much more can be purchased in our online shop or in our boutique after arrival.

For your stay you should bring comfortable clothing, slippers, walking shoes, rain gear, torch (flashlight), bathing suit and towels. Eyeglass wearers should bring a hard case for safe storage during the yoga classes.
