Yoga – A path to peace
October 1957: Swami Vishnudevananda arrives in California: he was sent by his teacher, Swami Sivananda (1887–1963), to spread the teachings of yoga in the West.
In 1969 Swami Vishnudevananda taught the first yoga teacher training course in the West as part of a universal peace mission based on the belief that the more people experience peace within, the more this peace will manifest in outward action.
Today, thousands of people practice the classical system of yoga exercises which Swami Vishnudevananda taught in the West beginning in 1957. The more than 60 Sivananda centres and ashrams worldwide are peaceful oases of intensive yoga practice, open to interested people from all walks of life.
All activities of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres are based on the concept of voluntary service. There are many ways to support the yoga centres. Let yourself be inspired to give your time to others and share the energy of the yoga practice with like-minded people.
